For his birthday, he asks for cash or gift cards. For Christmas, he does the same thing. Then doesn't spend any of it, until he has enough to buy what he wants. My son ended up with over $500 between Xmas and his birthday this year. In the last 3 years, he's used this method to buy himself 2 DS's, an ipod touch, games for the wii, the DS, the PS3, extra controllers, a headset, all of his own clothing that doesn't fall into our budget or what we're willing to spend on a hoodie...etc. He shops for sales and makes his dollar go far, but doesn't sacrifice what he really wants. Granted, my husband is also a big gamer so we go along with his plan and on occasion they will split the costs of expensive things they will both benefit from, like the PSP or some games they can play together. In between money holidays he also mows lawns, washes cars, shovels driveways, etc. If you shovel 15 driveways, or mow 30 lawns you will have enough to buy your own PS3, and like others have said, if you save up the bulk of the cost, your parents may be impressed with your efforts and responsibility, and pick up the difference.
